Swan Neck Bolt
In the days when metal came flat, not round, you couldn't just revolve the bolt so a casing was to hold it in place. So the smith doubled back the bolt and tempered it to make a spring, with a backplate! It doesn't rattle...and won't fall open or shut by itself,,,comes with a mortise plate, swan-necked (think about it!!). A neat little bolt.

Fishtail Bolt
The sliding bolt is more complicated than it looks! The slider has a spring back, to stop it accidentally falling shut (or open) and to give a more positive feel. Later, when machines could make round rod, the spring backed, square section became too expensive to produce and the bolt was fitted with a 'tower' so it could turn into slots in the backing sleeve to be held in place, open or shut.
Measures 4ins (100mm), weighs 4.1/4oz or 120 grams.
